WE MADE IT! After our separate flights from the east and west of Canada to Houston, an emotional reunion during the layover, and a flight together filled with laughter, we have now arrived safe and sound and are officially beginning our adventure in Belize, uke's in hand.
After a long travel day we decided to spend the night in Belize City at our hostel Safe Haven, where we spent the majority of the night exploring the streets when we stumbled across a church party that was 12 hours in the making. Turns out, Friday is the one day of the week that ordinarily early closing city comes alive and the church goers party to the early hours of the morning. Music, dancing, and fireworks can be experienced throughout the town, which sleepy Canadians might mistake for gun shots. Worry not, they are just a loud, bright, and colourful reminder that the party in the city is only beginning.
The locals of Belize City are extremely warm and welcoming and our host at our hostel fell nothing short than that. But if you're chasing wildlife and culture, we wouldn't recommend an extended stay in Belize City. Though the locals are some of the nicest we've met and food some of the most flavourful we've had (after a long search), the city didn't match what you would picture when thinking of a vibrant Belize. Buildings are a little rough around the edges, and the city didn't quite captivate our affection. But if you do find yourself needing to stay the night, we recommend checking out Tropicolada for authentic (and delicious) Caribbean cuisine, and keeping a deck of monopoly deal on hand for nighttime entertainment.
With a few of our own missteps and good advice from our host, we took the next ferry out from the city to Caye Caulker.
From the moment we stepped off the ferry, we have been in awe of this beautiful island. Abundant in colours, seafood, and stray puppies to be pet, you could say we're in our own little piece of paradise.
Being back on the road together again makes our hearts so happy and we could not be more excited to find out what the next month has in store for us. We've heard people say before that "home is where the heart is," so we suppose you could say we're home for the holidays.
Feeling a happiness overload,
Kass & Sam
